Mel you have to let us know about the Decorating Diva's board!

After reading the Nesting blog I spent the afternoon heading to two snooty fabric stores and Hancock Fabrics looking for fabric.

Since some of you mentioned liking plates I thought I'd show mine off. I've been collecting them for about 7 years. I have transferware plates all over my house and get tons of compliments on them. They are a bargain too since most of them came from TJ Maxx/Marshalls, Ebay or flea markets. A few were bought at antique stores and one platter is family heirloom.

The dining room is the only room I can get pics of tonight since dh is asleep. Don't mind my scrapbooking mess in the background!

I love this thread! Thanks for all the great ideas. I'll have to take pics and see what I can share, too. I love transforming what you already have into something new, or working with old pieces found at estate sales, etc. I'll try to post pics in the next few days.

That said... I thought I'd share some sites that I spend way too much time on, lol!

paint ideas - Easy projects (not just paint!) for the most part with clear how-to's and pictures. I love when there are pics so I know what I'm doing and what it will/ should look like! (http://www.paintideas.com/default.asp)

shelter style - Check out this designer's portfolio. She redecorates using what the owner already adds. She also uses lots of fabric and interesting accessories. I'd love to be her friend! (http://www.shelterstyle.com/style_tips.php)

frugal home decor - Lots of how-to's and ideas (how to make a divider, frames, etc.) It also has a message forum (see middle of page for link). The HD forum is not awfully busy, but there are usually some interesting ideas found there. (http://www.frugal-home-decor.com/)

Shari - If you don't already know Shari, you are missing out! She is from the show "Room By Room" on HGTV, and she has a true talent with fabric. She can design and create anything! She shows you how to make curtains, swags, blinds, bedding, tableclothes, reupholstering, etc. Even if you are not that great at sewing, you can do this! If you don't wish to sew, you can still get great ideas for window treatments and other things. Ok, enough about Shari... (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/pac_ctnt_nobanner/text/0,1783,HGTV_10680_25849,FF.html)

alternative windows - another sewing home decor site from window treatments to ornamental trimmings... (http://www.alternative-windows.co.uk/index.htm)

Enough for now...keep posting your great ideas, and thanks!

This post has been brought to you by the letter D and the number 2.

Did nobody go to target today? I wanted to redo my bathroom and bedroom and they were having a semi-decent sale. I finally got a nice frame to hang my diploma in the living room. I got two extra towel racks for $5 each. I got large bath towels for $5 in dark brown, hand towels for $4 in pink, and face towels in brown for $3. I got a king size sheet set in pink and a set of brown pillowcases (since someone...we shall not name names ...decided to destroy mine) for $23 and $11. I also got a king sized down-free comforter for $39. They were out of the down comforters at the same price. Two panels of curtains were $9 and a little silver bedside vase for those fake brown stick things was $4. I also found the energy to hang all the pictures that were just lying around in frames as well.

Clean-I love the picture you posted of what you were interested in doing over your entertainment center. I might have to borrow your idea!

Whoever was asking about those pretty flower sticker from Ikea, for the wood plank idea, I saw them today. They were in the poster/artwork section.

As for my bookcase. The PB bookcase uses wainscotting as a background, I just used a piece of scrap laminate. I flipped it over, and painted it white. Next, I made a box using a 1 x 4. The length and height was based on how big a space I had. (mine measures 30" x 36"; YMMV) I attached the backing to the box, and added two equalily spaced shelves. (I mention this, because if I were to do over, I'd space them out a little more, for the oversize books.) On the "sides" I drilled holes the size of the dowel rods. (sorry, I can't remember what size these are, I picked them just buy eyeballing them.) I inserted the rods, adding glue. I cut off the excess, and let it all dry. While I did get all bas-a$$ and used a router on the edges, you totally do not need to do this. Three coats of white, and I hung it in the hallway. Sorry, but this is the best pic that I could do right now (DH is on a trip, w/my camera):

Is it too dark to see? (see my pink magnetic eraser board next to it? With DD's magnets?)

If you need more detailed instructions, let me know.

HTH!!!

ETA: to whoever asked about my electronics ledge, I used a pretty long shelf, about 26" and extra deep, maybe 4". At first the only cord you would see was the surge protector cord, going into the wall. I had an electrician come out and hardwire the surge protector right into the wall outlet, through the wall, so you wouldn't see the cord. I had other small jobs for him to do, so it was totally worth it for me to have him do it. I'd post a pic, but it seriously just looks like a shelf, with phones on it.

JustinsMommy - do you know what color you used in your dining room? I am going to add some wainscoting (sp??) to my dining room and love what you have done. We will be having the room painted in a few months. I also like what you did with the plates. My mom collects antiques and has them all over her house like that. Very nice!

LOL Ashley! I'm pretty much fearless now when it comes to projects. I figure, "well, it can't look any worst, right?"

But, since I had my camera phone out, I took another pic. This is a small space between my fireplace (That DH and I rebuilt by ourselves, BTW. Well, mostly by ourselves.) and my sliding door. It was just empty and lonely. I bought these beautiful shadowboxes at Target. (clearanced in the fall, TYVM) I filled one with corks, and the other with vintage matchbooks.

I'm really rethinking the matchbooks.
1. we don't smoke
2. the corks just look so much better
3. when we have company over, and we open a bottle of wine, we write our guests names on the corks and date them.

Sooo....I have alot more corks than matchbooks. I plan to replace the top box soon. (when I'm not on BBC anyways)

Hope you can see the pics!

Oh, and if you don't drink wine, you can put any kind of treasures in there. (as if, you don't drink wine! J/K, J/K don't send me hate mail.) Shells, pinecones, shiny rocks, small xmas ornaments. You can rotate them for the seasons.

I also have a small durable basket right by my front door. We put any "treasures" that we collect on our walks in there. This came out of necessity, since I got tired of finding pinecones and rocks all over the house. It honestly looks pretty.

oh! I also have a small fishbowl on my bathroom counter. I started tossing the "extra" buttons that come with clothes. It honestly looks so cute now, like I did it on purpose! Plus, if you ever need a button, you know where to go.

Okay, it's not all about me. I know, I know.

I feel your pain Jessica! I have a shoebox for a kitchen.

Ok, here's a couple things to share...

I had a quilt rack, draped a scarf valance (is that the right term?), added ivy. Have received some compliments on it. And yes, it used to be centered over the bed, but the bed got moved and I didn't have the energy to move this

I think a nice picture would look good under this instead of the heart, make it look like a window kind of, but DH is paranoid about heavy pictures falling on his head.

Use a cute creamer pitcher (couple bucks anywhere) for a vase:

Someone mentioned framing a thermostat? I have one in the middle of a wall, here was my solution (please excuse the crooked ones)

I live in a rental condo, so I am a bit limited on what I can do. Can't wait to have my own house to paint, etc!

LOVE this thread!!! Getting awesome ideas....its late and I'll have to look around but here is one of my fave projects I've done for my sons nursery:

I am now in the process of re-doing these letters to go with his new "big boy" room theme of cars....I bought those for $1 each at my craft store. I painted them and used the Wallies Moon and Stars to decorate them. I used the left over wallies to decorate the dresser.

Thanks for the ideas on my wall/entertainment center idea. As for a mirror, I have a huge one above the sofa on the opposite wall. Oh, and it was a steal at .... Hobby Lobby, of course. (Only we call it the Hobo Lobo in my family!!)

Oh, and whoever mentioned the little black table next to the entertainment center, I had to really stop and think anout that one! Um, I embarrassingly admit that it was our old tv that had died. Yes, DH left it there for weeks until I had my neighbor friend come over and help me move it!

I am really leaning towards family pics.

And, I am upset because my beloved Hobo Lobo is closed on Sundays!!!

AHHHHHH!!!! (that's me, jumping up and down and screaming in delight!)

This thread is awesome, and the nesting place blog has great ideas!!! I have a ginormous living room with lots of empty space since we're still in the decorating process. We just finished our breakfast room and I put a small round table in storage from there, but now I am going to use it for the living room...after I get some fabric and stuff for the top.

I almost never go to Hobby Lobby, since like Mel, ours is 25 minutes away and I would spend a ton in there. But I think tomorrow I'm going to head over and see what I find.

Oh, and for those who need coupons, I signed up online with Joann Fabrics and I get online and mailed coupons (usually for 40% off) at least once a week.

Sorry it took me so long to post, our internet was down for 4 LONG days. The curtains are two dishtowels on each side sewn together the long way and then sewn at the top to fit the tention rod. They are lined with a pillowcase (although you cannot tell it is a pillowcase) for a more finished look. I use sheets and pillow cases for curtains and things b/c it already has a finished edge so less work and it is cheaper.

you could also try Michaels or AC moore if you have them.

I found a picture of our changing table in the closet, and before anyone yells at me DH was right their in case our son moved, or woke up. we just wanted a picture of him since he fell asleep during his diaper change. There are shelves above the chagning table with baskets for onsies and diapers. below is a rolling cart for some extra clothes that i roll out during nap time to restock when putting laundry away and a diaper pail.

I have one thing that people always comment on in DS's room. I got the idea from some show on HGTV. I put up a curtain rod on his wall so he can put up art work or anything else. I put clips on the curtain rod. I bought two of them at Linens 'n Things a few years back and I got them for like $10 total w/the clips.

If you need a picture to visualie it let me know.

Your PB inspired shelf is AMAZING! I can say that because we actually have the Pottery Barn shelf in my dd's room! I know I spent way too much on it, but I loved the idea and could not imagine building it! Anyway, here is mine:

The wall appliques are from Pottery Barn also. Here is a picture of her little reading area in her room:

I forgot all about this idea.

I wanted something to hold my powder laundry detergent and look nice. I know they make those tin ones you can put your box in, but I just bought this LARGE lidded glass jar from walmart for $13 and I love it. It almost holds the entire large box of detergent I buy. I have it sitting on a dishtowel on my dryer. They have other size jars like this at WM too. Now I'm dreaming of new front loads and nice countertop above. I'm getting low on laundry det.

I also had this old piece of wood that I found at my parents and just took some craft paint and painted this.

Clean! I've spent my sons whole naptime reading the rest of the thread to make sure I wasn't repeating another poster's reply, but apparently not, so here goes. (BTW, I'm talking about the high peak wall behind your armoire pic that you posted )

If it were my wall, I'd get one of those huge-azz oversized wall clocks and put it high up, dead center. That'd leave some room on the lower right to do the pic thing that you posted. I really liked the scroll iron work mixed in with the pics, too.

Here's a link to several wall clocks, you could probably find one cheaper locally though. http://www.simplywallclocks.com/lawacl.html Please post pics of whatever you do! Good luck.

I second the large clock idea! I got mine for $100 from Target's Global Bazaar section a few years ago and I love the way it looks!

Here's mine above the mantel:

(I don't usually have all those candles and stuff up there!)

I need to replace those UGLY sconces!!! They are wired, but don't have electricity going to them, so I need something large enough to cover the hole they will leave. I have brushed nickel and black wrought iron in the room...anyone have any links to some sconces under $20 each with shipping???!!!

Mel, I am so excited about that decorating board!! That sounds awesome! It might become a new obsession for me... as if I need another board! LOL!

Here are a few ideas to contribute. I found a tablecloth, a nice heavy one, clearanced out at Target for $12.xx. Used to be $50! I used it in our bedroom as a curtain valence:

Excuse all the baby gear in the room.

Same window treatments, but in our old house, I used them this way, over the bed: One more: Mirrors are SO expensive, but given that we live in a townhome, surrounded by windowless walls on three sides, I wanted to add as many mirrors as I could to bring in light. So, I got an old bathroom mirror for free, and framed it (crudely) with some wood, and then painted and distressed the frame to match my decor. Total cost was $8. Like a PP, I use black spray paint a lot. I had some floor lamps that were silver and looked cheapy, so I just removed the tops and sprayed the rest of them black. I have done the same thing with light fixtures, picture frames, you name it. Hope these ideas can help someone!

Melanie,

HomeGoods has sconces for $20, if you have one.

Otherwise, why not just get rid of the sconces altogether? Just patch up the drywall with either a drywall patch (at Lowes or HD), or just drywall spackle from a can, and then touch up the paint. Problem solved :)

We have an odd shaped house with vaulted ceilings on the front with the bedrooms on the back and we have skylights on either side of the fan which I thought I would love but they let way too much light in and heat the house up in the summer time (the house faces east and gets sun almost all day long.) So my dh saw something similar to this on Carter Can.
We got just regular old panels from Walmart and cut them shorter and rolled them around a rod that came off our long set of windows that the kids broke the hanger to (cut to size). We stapled the end then rolled them up. The top is how it came. We secured them to the ceiling with eyelets and hooks with the eyelets attached to the rod and the hooks on the ceiling. It works nice because it doesn't completely block the light out and it gives it IMO a caribbean feel (like I'm living in a hut?!) It still lets light out of the sides a little and it looks really cool when you can see the shadow of the fan. I don't know, it's hard to describe!

You gals are so crafty, I'm impressed and jealous.

The extent of my craftiness is to copy W&G's black and white photowall. Unfortunately it's taking forever because I keep waiting for sales on prints and frames, then I can only afford so much at a time.

Here is the project so far.. its just scraps of paper representing the size of the photos I currently have framed:

I probably need about a hundred more pics before I can fill that wall! It's going to look like a posterboard for awhile yet.

Anyway, I have no contribution but wanted to say thanks to everyone for the cool decor tips.

Lemony-nice balance w/the paper-to be frames. I think that's the biggest challenge. I have a split stairway; hmm, wonder if I *could* do it on the second part???

Mel, I think it's a great idea for the new boards-I'll be looking for Decorating Divas! Thanks.

I saw the big Stars at Big Lots today-around 10 bucks. I got mine at Kirlands as someone already mentioned.

Question, What do all of you use to hang your prints/photos? I hate the look of the gold hangers w/the nail that goes in in a downward angle. But what else works well?

Also, today at Ross, they had some realistic looking fake fruit. Usually I use real lemons/limes etc, but these really looked authentic.

Gee, I might not be much help! And my DH helped me, too, so I should have given him credit. I really didn't do a "proper" framing job. I guess it is the framing version of a window mistreatment, LOL.

Basically I just measured a piece to fit every side, and glued them on. Then, on the back, I cut two lengths of wood for the top and bottom, and nailed those pieces INTO the front piece of wood, sort of trapping the mirror between them. Just as added security since the mirrors are so heavy and glue just won't cut it.

Then, I attached a few brackets to the back and hung it by those. It probably will not last through the generations, but that is okay, LOL.

I have to admit that at first this thread and especially the link to the nesting lady got me really depressed because I felt like a decorating loser compared to you ladies. But now I have moved on from depression to inspiration and I made a list of projects to tackle this week when ds naps.

My only cute tip is that I have a big tin flower pot thing- you've probably seen them in all the home decor stores- and I use it on my toilet tank to store 3 extra rolls of toilet paper. I know, not that exciting, but it is a heck of a lot nicer than running out of tp and I have no storage in there.

This is the best thread I've seen in a long time.

Not tons to add but here goes:

I have an odd wall in my kitchen that is tiny and a weird shape so I found a simple, vertical plate rack at Home Goods. It's black wrought iron and has space for 3 plates. I like that I can inexpensively change out the plates for the seasons and it adds a nice touch of color for not a lot of money.

I love earthware, crocks and pottery so I use them throughout the house-a large crock by the door for hats and mittens, pottery as plant holders, etc.

I use the inexpensive photo boxes as book ends in the kids' bookshelf. I can stack 2 (denim and red) in which I store tights and things we don't often use and I can fit a small picture frame on top. It breaks up the books and adds some storage.

Other decorating/storage ideas: I have a fisherman's tackle basket thing hanging from our coat hooks for storing odds and ends, picnic baskets of varying sizes stacks in 3's with magazines and puzzles, blue galvanized pails from seasonal Target for socks and undies (one per person) in the laundry room, and some metal baskets that have chalk boards on the sides from Target's Easter clearance last year in the TV cabinet for storing CD's.

Last thing-found some denim tab top curtains that were a great price but too long so I cut the tabs off and hemmed them. They even had a rod pocket at the other end so no need to make one. Hung one on each window pulled back with a cute drapery hook and hung a red bandana over the top of each one with the triangle side down. Looks cute.

Ooh I did get the Apothecary JArs from Big Lots. Let me go take a pic. I haven't thrown the box away yet either so I'll take a pic of that too.

I didn't have any luck finding a decanter at TJ Maxx though. I've looked almost everywhere that I can think of but I'm not having any luck. I took everything down from above my kitchen cabinets too and now it looks so bare! I've been waiting with my Caraway paint sample for months so I think I'm finally going to head to Menards tomorrow and get some paint. I have a feeling that it's going to be a while before I get it all just right up there.

Macy's has some great apothacary jars too. They were on a round table near the china section.

I was at Big Lots today and didn't see any at mine, but I'm going to look at another one this week.

The fake fruit at Ross looks great! I have a big glass pitcher that has fake lemons in it with silk hydrangeas. When I have company, I use real lemons and real hydrangeas, but the fake ones still look great.

OOOOH! sorry, I got confused I guess.

The distressing part was easy.

I actually used acrylic paint that you can buy a little bottle of for 99 cents at a craft store. I already had it because I mural as a hobby.

I mixed up the shade of turquoise that I wanted, and painted the whole frame. Then, I took a dry brush and dipped it in just a SMIDGE of black paint, and ran it around the frame in different places to give it a weathered, dimensional look.

After that, I basically just took my nails and fingers and scraped and rubbed at the paint to take off some of it in various spots, letting the bare wood show through.

Hope that helps!

A good 2 weeks or more. They sort of fade one by one, and I cut them up into small wedges and throw them in the disposal. I can fill a large bowl for WAY less than it would cost me in flowers for a similar sized container.

Mini artichokes look cute as well (I like the texture of them).

Picture overload.

This is what I did this weekend!

Before, the kids photos were lined up in a row like little toy soldiers. I never really liked it, but did get a lot of compliments. Now I have this. THANK YOU nesting lady!

Oh, and behind the little picture frame on the left...the thermostat!

The little 1/2 round table came from Hobby Lobby. It's black with a distressed finished with maghogany under it. There is 1 drawer and it opens on the bottom. I have put a basket inside to hold toys. DH anchored it to the wall. It's not as big as I'd like, but I actually bought it for a different spot in the house and it doens't fit there, so we put it here. What do you think, I can return it if I need to, but they don't have a bigger one.

Here is the other view of the living room. Notice the new coffee table! Thank you HL!

Now I do have to deal with the empty space next to my chair (the one on the R) I think I'm going to add a table with fabric and either some mirrors or some empty frames.

Don't mind the empty mantle or bare windows. I think I'm going to take the extra trim down above the mantle so that my painting will fit (see last picture for painting) I have a beautiful fabric from Joanns that I want to get if I can get a coupon or they have 1/2 off fabric. It's gold and rust stripes with touches of brown. I'm going to add dark brown bamboo shades.

Another view of my new wall. The picture to the left is coming down, and I'm thinking a scroll iron artwork piece that is round to counteract the hard lines of the grouping on the right. See the barn on the floor? My dad built that from scratch for my 4 y/o who LOVES horses! All wooden.

One last view. That's is my beloved Oil painting. It's a Paris scence of the Arch de Triumph. I LOVE it, you can see all of the blues but there is also a lot of greens, rusts and browns.

Notice the coffe table again $239 (I think) It has 3 drawers on the front to hold toys! Makes clean up a cinch!

So there ya have it. My next project is the window treatements in the breakfast room. I'm completely redoing them and need to get fabric for drapes as soon as I can. I also need to decorate the top of my armoir, not pictured b/c the top is shameful. Oh, and the colors of my furniture looks much better in person. I just used a cheap ole digi for the pics tonight.

Mel- very nice. When I first saw your half round table, from the side angle, I thought it looked a bit small, like it needs to be bigger to extend under the mirror AND pictures, but from the other views(what I can see), I think it looks fine. I could go either way with it. Are you going to put anything on the top?

And I am so doing the thermostat cover, ours is in my dh's office and I always stare at it and hate out it sticks out on the wall.

Lisa, I would go to a fabric shop for fabric. As for how much to order, measure the width of your window. (For width you need 1 1/2 to 2 times the width of your window. (ie if your window is 36" wide then you would need a width of 54" to 72" ) (So looking at that pic, if the material you were buying is a 45" width, You should order approx 2 yards I would maybe go 2 1/4 so that you can match up pattern and do nice hems etc. ps If you want any sewing tips for them, I'm clickable.

I did the shelves lined with the scrapbook paper today. They turned out cute and jazz up my office bookshelves nicely. I have one question though, what did everyone use to hold the paper in place? I used washable glue so that if I change my mind on the papers, I can remove easily without damaging the wood. Now I am not sure if I should have done that or given in to the hotglue gun.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks! I think it could be bigger, but not much. I didn't really think about it until I looked at the photos, so I think it "will do"

For the top, I know I want a lamp and there is a plug below so that's good. Not sure about what else maybe a bowl or something, it has to be something the kids won't destroy so apothacary jars were not be a good idea for that spot.

NOT more photos though HA HA. DH suggested photos, I think we have enough there already LOL!

Oh, I haven't done it ye

t b/c I need to go to the store, but I'm going to use double sided tape. So they look a little off right now, but you can get an idea.

Here are some pics I like this idea and will like it better when I get another piece and stick them up right!

Mel ~ I think the table looks great! I love the picture frames and mirrors on the wall. At first I did a double take because I thought you had posted a pic from the Nester.

I started scrounging around my house after buzzing through this thread. My dh has put me on a cash freeze so I can't go out and buy any new stuff. I did manage to dig out a couple of glass vases from under the sink. I put them side by side on one end of my mantel with a couple of old books under one. I don't know what I am going to put in them though. I am actually thinking that acorns would look cute in one of them. Where in the world do I find acorns this time of year? Normally I am nagging at my kids to empty them out of their pockets when we leave the park, but I guess I should have let them drag them home last year.

I also found a cylindrical blue vase that I put on my kitchen breakfast bar and filled with lemons. I think it looks awesome since my kitchen is blue and yellow.

I also have a small sofa at the top of the landing in my home, which is actually more like a small room. Anyway, I put a small console table along one wall up there, added a lamp with a pretty shade and a few picture frames. It looks so cozy. I just want to go up there and curl up to read. Maybe I will tomorrow.

Anyway, you ladies are amazing! Keep the ideas coming. I can't wait to hear more.

~~~Coming out of lurkdom~~~
Well thanks to this thread & to the Nester blog, I have completed several decorating projects today. I papered the back wall of a black distressed bookcase, rearranged my sitting area, grabbed the table I was going to toss & bought some fabric to make a tablecloth, got inspired to get some decor I was going to toss & find it a new spot in my house.
This week I am going to:
-buy a decanter (LOVE that idea)
-finish the tablecloth
-hang 2 more pictures/wall art items
-hide my thermostat
-check out some yard sales & thrift stores
Thank you for all of the great ideas. I hope I can join the decorating divas when the new boards begin.
Webmom - sorry to ask another question about your charger station...I went to Target today and got the ledge and a narrow surge protector. But when I took the corners off the ledge...lo and behold I can't just take off the back by unscrewing it like I thought I could - the shelf is all one piece. Did you just cut a hole in the back? And how? I don't know how to begin cutting a hole (I'd need a rectangle) in this. I'm afraid I'll just smash it if I try to start it.
Help!
Thank you! My house's lower level flows in a large circle with sand paint in the foyer and lime green accents (rug and accessories) then off to left, I have the office in chocolate and to the right, I have a formal living room in a lighter sage and that flows into the dining room in the lime. Then the rest of the house; kitchen and eating area and family room go back to the sand and chocolate but with red accents. (I will post more pictures later as I have some questions there that I have been dying to get another opinion on.) So to keep everything in harmony, I wanted to add more lime/sage to the shelves in the office as it is the first thing you see when you enter the house. The papers really did make it pop! I still would like to add a little reading nook in the office with a chair and lamp. Perfect for whoever is in the room, but not on the computer. Any idea for an inexpensive, but pretty/comfy chair???
Ok, here are the Apothecary jars from Big Lots. I don't have them all filled yet and they aren't in place yet in my bedroom but at least you can see them.
Here's the box so your DH will know what to look for. I totally missed them when I first walked down the aisle but my DH found them.
I haven't checked out the nesting blog yet but I thought I would post a few kitchen cabinet pics and ask you ladies for advice for what to put on them. I bought the star at Gordman's last night for $6 but I have no clue what else to put up there. I don't want a lot but I don't want it to look bare either. KWIM? We are going to paint Caraway so I think that will help fill the space a bit too. What do you think? What else should I look for?
Oh, and I totally plan on cleaning up the side of the fridge too and the basket on top will be gone once I figure out where to put the cereal. LOL
I LOVE your cafe curtains!!! I really really do! The fringe really adds a lot too. I'm going to try some this week, and was unsure about the fringe, but after seeing your pics, I'm learning towards doing more fringe. Did you really hot-glue the fringe?
Someone should give Nester a link to this thread-- she's become so popular over here!
She's reading the thread and loving all of the sweet comments. All of the creations are looking wonderful!!
I love the fringe, the jars, the shelves, all of it. I'm tempted to skip our plans for the week with visitors and make them help decorate our house (more like babysit so I can decorate).
Mel-your room is looking great! I think new houses are so difficult! We've been in ours for a year now and I still feel like we have so much empty space that needs filling. I guess it's always a work in progress. It's looking fabulous though! I love your colors!
Oh! And to the poster with the polka dot kitchen-how fun! We're actually doing polka dots in dd's room. I'm cutting fabric and using the starch to stick. I think they're adorable! I love how you pulled them together w/ your pink pieces as well. It looks great!
Thanks! Yes. Even though I have a sewing machine, I did it all with my hot glue gun. I hot glued the silk fringe! I managed to hot glue a couple of my fingers, too! Ouch!
I think the trim adds a nice contrast.
Just FYI from someone who didn't know this tidbit of info about acorns......they contain little weevilly white worms that will eventually make their way to the outside unless you bake the acorns at a low temp for awhile. They are DISGUSTING! I had collected a boatload of acorns to decorate as tiny pumpkins with my kids one halloween. Then I kept finding these little wormies...then read about that fact. They'll be fine if you bake them first though.
Just wouldn't want you traumatized like I was :)
LOL about the acorns. I would so be the one that put out a nice bowl of them and have worms all over my kitchen! Thanks for the warning pp. I agree that they would look great as decor!
Candee-I love those eggs and your jars/vases and how you filled them! They look great! I also love the lamp, my mom had many of those as decor when I was younger.
Just a warning that I had no idea about until a few months ago on the board-the oil in them is extremely, extremely toxic. It sounds like yours is in a safe place being up high and all-I just wanted to warn you because I had no idea it was so toxic. I *think* this is an article about it: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00055332.htm. I think they're great and fine for decor-I just wanted to post a heads up for you/anyone interested.
*I hope that didn't come off rude or anything like that-I really just wanted to share an FYI. Thanks again for all of the fabulous ideas!
Thanx for the heads up Mytwocherries. I didn't know per se that they were toxic but had the idea that they were in one way or another harmful considering it is highly flamable. We do keep them in a high up place. I would have it out but it was actually my husbands decore idea (I think this was his only decore idea) and he loves it... but now that I know how toxic it is... it might just be enough just to have them dumped.... or replaced with just water lol
I love how you decorated your mantle for halloween cute!
Last yr Target had that monkey line and I wanted my son to have a monkey room. So we bought the monkey rug and two monkey towels and made the towels into a valance it turned out cute. We had sheer curtains in our room (tan) just above we put a red,blue,white beaded garland on the rod. We bought fabric at wal-mart and made kitchen curtains and valances. Bought fabric for the bathroom and made a curtian then stenciled stars at the bottom. Took my bathroom trash can made out of bamboo and put a small beaded garland on there glued it. My son's room is thomas the train bought fabric and made a valcance and covered a lamp shade with it. Take a hurrican and put a beaded garland in the bottom. Jars of fake fruit.
I had no clue what an apothecary jar was till I read this thread!
I have a beach theme in my bathroom (I know, kinda overplayed) and I think these would look nice on the top of my cabinet over the toilet instead of the plain candles I have.
I know sea shells would look nice (and I could get them off my sink where they sit now in a bowl) but I wonder what else I can put.
I also have a small candle with colored sand and a few seashells/starfish inside......but it has a spot in the middle for a small candle to go inside.
Also, on the other wall, (since it's smaller), they will be 10 x 13 (those shown are 11x14) with a 5x7 opening. He will be cutting those mattes himself since they didn't have that size.
I'm not sure this will pertain to many, but we have a very old house (in the 1800's) and lots of old windows left in the barn. I thought they would be great as picture frames, so I hung one horizontal and one vertical, and in all the window panes I put pictures. It looks really neat, sorry I don't know how to post pics, I don't even have a PB account....
Just wanted to add that you could put beach glass or white sand in your apothecary jars. I found beach glass in green and blue and mixed it with some white sea shells. It's on my fireplace hearth. Our family room is a blue/green color.
Candee, where did you find that 'nest' material you have in the bottom of your jars/bowls with the eggs? It looks like soft sticks.
I would love some suggestions on how to work with the mantle in our family room. I'd like to keep the clock on it because my dad made it, but other than that I have NO idea. Also the window kind of throws me. I have been pondering getting some of those vinyls letters and doing a fun quote around the arch of the window but I'm not sure...
Also as you can see it is the playroom too so I'm not sure how "decorated" I can really get with it!
1. I saw the apothocary jars at my Big Lots too. I almost bought them but I have so many random glass containers around the house that I opted not to incur hubby's wrath on this one.
2. I have a painting question....I have a little white cabinet that I use to hold toys. Up until now it has always been in dd's bedroom. However, I now need something in the living room to hold toys. So, I want to paint it black. What is the best way to do this? Do I use spray paint? Do I need to do anything to it prior to make the paint adhere better? Can I spray paint outside even when it's cold? HELP! Can you tell I have never painted anyting in my life?
Melissa THANKS!!! I'm so proud of it.
It's 65 inches, but it could be done on a smaller scale. My portraits are 8x10 framed in an 11x13 frame with a mat. You could buy a smaller mirror and use either 8x10s with no mat or 5x7s matted. Also, there is about 5-6 inches b/t my mirror and frames, so you can move them closer together. You can also use an oval mirror to scale it down some, or you can do a mirror on one side and 2 photos on the other.
My ledge had a cheapo fiberboard backing, and it just popped off. It didn't even have screws to hold it in place. What material is your ledge made out of? Is it wood or some sort of molded plastic?
The PB bookcase was really really easy. I got fancy and used a router, but you can still make it without using one. It'll be a few simple cuts, and putting it together.
Someone asked about painting a bookcase that was already painted. How is it painted now? You'll need to know what kind of paint is on there now in order to paint it again.
Someone already posted a pic of the three jars from BL. I also saw this one:
It shows a nice example of shells for the beach bathroom.
Ask Bethany,
The space above the fireplace would look great with some fabric I think. The window is beautiful and doesn't need to be covered unless privacy or sunlight is an issue....but something like this swag with a fabric that coordinated with the sofa pillows would be cheap to do and add a lot of color and warmth to the space.
I can't remember what that giraffe thingy is called at the top...a korbel?...but anyway I see them all the time at stores like Ross and marshals for around $5 or $10.
This is a baby nursery from RateMySpace..but you get the idea.
I don't have a picture b/c I haven't done it yet. I have to get some other decorating ideas, but essentially all I'm going to do is take a pretty frame, pop out the back and the glass and then hang it up with the alarm box in the middle.
What I did with my living room was hide the thermostate behind a picture. If you look at the little shelves you can see that the picture frames are actually propped on the shelf. The thermostate is actually behind the one on the left. You can just pick the picture frame up, adjust the temp and then put it back.
To the poster who wanted to paint the toy storage shelves black, I can't remember your name now after going thru all the last posts, but I would ask at the paint dept at Home Depot or Lowes what would be best. I was going to paint an old dresser last year black to go behind my sofa as a table, and the guy there ended up talking me out of it. He said it would take at least 3 coats, and I also wanted a matte finish, which he said was hard to get ?? I can't remember why now. Anyways, I ended up painting mine a cream color to match our kitchen cupboards since it is placed right next to that area and it turned out great. Is there any other color that would work for your area without painting black? Let me know if you end up going with black, and how it turns out. I would love to know for future things i paint.
I love all the ideas shared, I have been watching this thread.
I have matted and framed some of my kids artwork to put on the walls in our family room in our basement, I also bought some album frames, and framed 4 of my "old" lp albums from the 80s! When we did that room over it is a hodge-podge of movie & tv & music themed decor along with framed kids artwork. It looks fun down there!
I have no pics, but if you take a big hurricane vase/jar and fill it with whole coffee beans and then put a fruity (cranberry smells really good..) candle in the middle, once the candle burns down, the heat from the candle also makes the coffee beans smell really good.
I have an idea for a 1/2 bathroom. Rather than using a bathroom rug in a 1/2 bath, I use a really nice round wool rug. I say 1/2 bath because in a full you would have to worry about it getting wet from showers/baths. A more formal rug rather than atypical blah bathroom rug really changes the feel of the bathroom. I just got a rug for $35 at TJ Maxx. Maybe a little expensive but I think it's worth it.
I bought some plates today and tried to put them but it just didn't look right, I only have room for a few, maybe that's the problem.
Thanks for the ideas. I think I have an oval table that we're not using for anything that might fit nicely back there, and if I could come up with a tablecloth, that would look nice. I have a floor lamp already, but it doesn't seem like it has enough "weight" to it, KWIM?
Ok, so since the person with awesome black and white bathtub photos of her kids posted, I've gotten insipired to do my bathroom.
And I noticed, my baseboards aren't in good shape. When sanding to repaint them the same color again (white), do I need to sand them down completely to the bare wood, or just till smooth and semi-depainted, kwim?
I'm sorry if I sound stupid, I've just never sanded a painted surface before. This is our first house.
Ashley
I haven't read all the posts, but here's what we did with our "headboard"...
We bought wood & dh cut it into these shapes. I primed and painted it to match our bedroom, and then used gorilla glue to hold them together. It's hung with heavy hooks on the back meant for large paintings and mirrors.
We've gotten a lot of compliments on it, and I love how it was cheap to make and unique. It was in one of those free magazines from Lowes a couple years ago that had the plans for it, but I think you could just figure out the scale you need for your size bed.
I bought that nest type material in a store here in Holland (it's like a doller store... so cheap cheap cheap). I have no idea what it is made of - it's like finely shreaded (length wise) straw but it's really long... They also had many different colours - I use a yellow one in my kids Easter baskets.
You might find it at a garden center... sometimes they put that kind of stuff in plant arrangements. May even find it in a craft store??? It's just something comonly used here for decoration.
Ashley, I wouldn't think you would have to sand them down at all (unless they have rough edges or have a high gloss surface to them), if so, you will have to re-primer them, and then paint them white.
I love the B&W photo ideas too, I thought that was a cute idea. I have been wanting to re-do our kids bathroom, but since 2 of my kids are teens now, I am not sure how they would like me putting up pics of them when they were little in the bathtub. They would be cute pics though, and great for going down memory lane. Hmmm....will have to think on that, I love that idea though!!
BETHANY: I'd put an inexpensive half-round art glass window inside of your arched window over the mantle. It mimics a nice vintage "attic room" look, creates an interesting art piece that works with or without the light behind it (so there is something there day or night - night being the biggie since it would be a black hole at night and with your light above you can illuminate it from the spots above on the inside - lovely!). Like THESE for example. HTH!
WOW! You are all EVIL! LOL!!! I can't believe I didn't see this thread earlier.
Thanks for the link to the nesting blog. She has some awesome ideas.
I wish I had something to contribute. You all have the neatest homes and ideas! I am slowly working on decorating/changing/organizing our home but I'm on a very limited budget. I guess I just have to get creative! I love the towel idea, I thought the polka dot kitchen was cute, I love Mel's using photos to hide the thermostat...and I love lots of other ideas too!
The only unusual thing I've done in our home is that I painted a fish mural in the kids' bathroom using acrylic paint. It took me a couple of months to do and I was really pg at the time. It turned out really cute but I think I need to add more fish to it some day.
Has anyone bought any furniture from Home Decorators? They have some big cabinets that look nice. I need some mega toy storage units that I can close the doors on for our LR. We don't have many furniture stores around here and those that are here don't have anything I like (or can afford). Ikea is a 4+ hour drive from here and I wasn't in love with what I saw there. I'm sick and tired of not having a place to put all the toys. Any ideas?
I am about 1/2 way through all of the posts, but I had to share. We used a lot of shells for our wedding, and I got them at
www.shellhorizons.com
Its wholesale, but they do sell to the public. If you are going to be using a lot of shells, their prices are really excellent. They also have large specimen shells, etc. I also called and asked them some questions about their products, and they were SOOOOO helpful!
I love this thread!
We have a couple lamps and a beautiful large frame and a nice big mirror.
The problem is that they are brass and it's so not me. They came with my dh and I know they are pretty old. I hate to get rid of them because I love the shape, size, just not the color.
Has anyone spray painted/painted brass stuff before? How do I do this? Pics would be great if you've done it.
I'm LOVING this thread!
For those people that don't have a Big Lots or a Target, I wanted to mention that Wal-Mart also has the apothecary jars sold individually. My store had a wide variety of sizes and shapes.
When I went to BL yesterday to look for the jars, I found something that really caught my eye. I prefer to use more realistic, natural elements when decorating for holidays. At BL, I found a set of dessert plates from Hallmark that were soft, muted pastel colors with a small, raised (but not painted) bunny around the edges of the plate. There were 4 plates to a set for $10. I loved them, but couldn't think of where to use them at the time and they did not have any other matching pieces. Today I got inspiration! We never use our formal dining room table, but I always keep it set because it's the first thing you see when you come in our front door. I have a set of dishes especially for that table/room, but I also have a set of solid white Mikasa dishes that I use when we have visitors. I plan to use the white dishes with the bunny dessert dishes on top on my formal table for Easter. Now I've got to find a centerpiece to compliment it. Anyone have suggestions? I love the apothecary jars, but I haven't found anything I like to put in them yet. I've considered making an Easter tree to put in a hurricane-type container, but I haven't found any decorations for the tree I like. I suppose I could make those too, huh? LOL! Anyway, I'm buying the dishes tonight! I'll share a pic of the table when I get a centerpiece and it's finished. Hopefully that will be before Easter is over.
Suzanne ~ I love the idea for your table! If you are looking for a centerpiece, what about taking an apothecary jar and filling it will those fake pastel eggs that you can find around. You could also use pastel colored jellybeans or some other sort of candy. Hmmm..what about swirling together different colors of Easter grass?
smiles72~ I have painted over brass fixtures with this spray paint. http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(p2yfbrjt1rbzdwadpxgeqf45)/productdetails.aspx?sku=1095231&source=GoogleBase
I painted over all of my outdoor brass fixtures with the hammered black paint and used the hammered brown paint on the fixtures in my bathroom. This stuff is amazing! A friend of mine had a hideous brass chandelier that she spray painted with the hammered black and now it looks like something out of Pottery Barn. She also used it to paint over a big gold frame. Just tape it off and you are ready to go! Now that the weather is warming up I cannot wait to hit gargae sales looking for things to paint over! I know you can find it at both Walmart and Home Depot. First, your fireplace wall is very pretty.
Second, or the other wall, I'd do an assortment of all different sized silver-toned frames (I think that's what the opposite side of the room has, right?) without pictures or glass in them. Then make sure one frames the intake vent & the thermostat and they should blend in.
Easter Tree idea -
I found these pussywillow braches at Micheal's last year on clearance for a $1.00 (SCORE). Finally get to use them this year. Because they were heavyish I wrapped the bottom in a zip tie to give it shape. Then to make it stand at attention in the vase I stuffed it with Easter grass. I didn't feel like driving to Micheal's again so I foudn these egg "sticks" at Walmart and just added them to the base of the branches. I might go back to Walmart for 4 more to fill it in better.
Well I have another idea playing off of the painting the intake valve and framing it.
buy a bunch of pretty scrapbook paper in coordinating colors. I see some blue and brown in your pillows so play off of that. Paint your intake valve to coordinate with the colors, so probably blue or brown, then frame it by haning an empty frame over it. You can get them cheap at HL. (i'm a little chicken, so I'd go with brown to play it safe) I know it sounds like it wll stand out more but if you put up a collage of pretty scrapbook paper then it will blend in with that and get lost.
I second the painting the vent the same color as the wall. That's what I did and it blends more than having a stark white went in the middle of a colored wall. I can't upload my pics but will once the printer is connected to the computer.
I also bought some furniture from Home Decorators and the quality is like Target a bit. I bought a black desk and it was easy to assemble. I can also take a pic of it and upload it afterwards.
This is my first contribution to this very cool thread but I have loved reading it and looking at all of your pictures! We are moving to a brand new house next week (so excited...it's the first brand new house I've ever lived in!), so I will probably be asking much advice on decorating in the coming weeks!
Here is my way of disguising/hiding the thermostat or alarm key pad:
The greenery hangs down and kind of camouflages it. I have a friend who uses a similar method, only she puts the holder under the thermostat and has peacock feathers sticking out of it to hide the thermostat. It's hard to describe but looks really cute.
I have a question also: Does anyone have their sink on their kitchen island? Our new kitchen is designed this way. I really think I will like it, but not sure how to decorate....I like paper towels right by the sink so maybe will have dh put a plastic paper towel holder on the door under the sink cabinet. I definitely will borrow the dish soap in a decorative container instead of the dawn or palmolive bottle right out where the world can see! I may start a new thread on this with pictures of mine next week when we move in (unless I get some super cool ideas on this thread!)....
I also have pics in my hallway. I won't post a pic, because they are all wonky. (I've been meaning to get those 3M strips that hold your pics straight, someone here recommended them to me on the last decorating thread.) Anyways, I bought this frame kit from Target last year. Basically, it's just differnent size picture frames. I found them in the fall, and they were on clearanced. I think I might have paid $6 for each box. I bought five boxes. The catch was, while all the boxes were the same shape, they were different finishes. I bought one shiney black finish, one cherrywood finish, two pine finish, and one white. It didn't matter to me, since I just spraypainted them all a flat black. (which, BTW, as tempting as it is to do, I would not advise it. It became a magnet for dust! I'm actually tempted to respray them all with a satin black finish.) So, I had all matching frames for a about $1 a frame! (counting the $$ for paint) So, don't let the finish discourage you, you can always paint it to match!
~Annie,Bacon&Lily~- can you post of pic of the toy bin? Or link from the target site? It's probably laminate. You can paint over laminate, but you need to prep the surface first. I did my old kitchen back in the day.
Well, I went back to BL today and got 2 sets of the Hallmark bunny dessert plates. I came home and moved the dishes I usually have there, put out the white dinner plates, and then placed the bunny plates in the center. I am in love! DH was loving the price too...regularly $28 for a set of 4 plates was now $10 at BL! Two sets of plates put me out $21.65 instead of $60.62 - now that's a great bargain! I can't remember who posted the pu$$y willows (BBC wouldn't let me type the real word), but I'm thinking of stealing that idea for a centerpiece...maybe with a few tiny painted eggs hanging on the branches. You know how it's fun to frame your child's art? Well, I did it with a spin. I bought a "fancy" picture frame from Walmart. I tore off the piece on the back you use to prop the picture. (That piece just adds bulk if you leave it.) I bought round strong magnets sold at any craft store and hot glued them onto the back. Put my dd's art into the frame and I now have the picture hanging on my fridge door. Looks a lot nicer than random pictures held up with magnets.
To make some cool magnets for the fridge. You buy a fabric button kit...sold at craft stores or fabric stores. The kit looks like this: http://www.jcarolinecreative.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=2214-000030-000&Category_Code=2300s&Product_Count=2
Make the buttons with your favorite fabric. This ebay listing gives you an idea what the buttons look like with fabric: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220204522678&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=320188395186&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget&_trksid=p284.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26ps%3D41
With wire cutters, cut off the wire loop on the back, and hot glue a round magnet to the back. Looks so cute!
Can someone help settle a dispute between DH and I? When you enter our house, you can see our living room and hallway that goes to the kitchen. It made sense to paint the hallway the same color as the living room. We also painted a portion of the staircase wall the same color. What color do we paint the rest of the stairs? We'll have to take the same color all the way up and down the upstairs hallway. DH thinks we should repaint the boring builder color that's there now and I think we should paint it the living room color. WDYT?
As you enter the house with front door and living room on your right.
I was just looking at Pottery Barn and found the grapevine that you liked on clearance for $2.99.
It could go either way. You could continue the same color or a different, but there is NO WAY I would do the same builder paint color. You want to liven it up!
beautiful color btw, what is it.
I would absolutely continue that same color all the way up the landing and to the end of your upstairs hallways. It's a great color!
TY!!! That rocks. Wonder how much I will need, I bet I have 20 feet of cabinet space. Think 50 feet would be enough? That's only 10 of them! $30!
ETA: Hmm, it says 14.5", but in the product description it says 5 feet long...what to do, what to do!
Thank you! It's Caramel Gold from Lowe's but was mixed at Porter Paints. LOVE Porter Paints. I need to do window treatments in the living room that's the same gold color. I'm thinking something dark blue like this room. DH thinks something red but I'm tired of red.
UGH! I saw that too the difference in lengths... I was so impressed with that GREAT FIND!! I'd call to verify the dimensions. In the product description it says 5'!!!!!!!!! Fingers crossed that is correct and the info in the "order" part is NOT.
Keep us posted. I wish I had a good use for some of that b/c it's beautiful!!
I really like the look of the blue window treatments. We did the dark red/burgandy and I like them but now that spring is around the corner, I feel like they are "too dark", if that makes any sense. Though I don't know what I could do to change things up with the color of our furniture. This is the only picture I have of the living room with the curtains kinda showing. Any thoughts??
