What do you do that's practical, but pretty?

I've got a few little things in my house that people regularly comment on and I know others must as well, so let's share ideas.

My 2 favorites are the pretty bottle with dispenser by my sink that holds dishwashing detergent (yes, I've been reading Martha Stewart since it first came out, LOL) and one from Home magazine - instead of leaving a big bottle of Scope out on my bathroom vanity, I bought a simple thin wine decanter at TJ Maxx or $9 and pour the mouthwash into it. Looks pretty and since my bath/bedroom are in aqua, it actually matches

Thought of another~

I sewed two small piece of ribbon to both sides of a short end of a hand towel. I then tie it on the towel bar in the girls' bathroom. No more towels on the floor and they can still dry their hands.

Dude. I am SO stealing that towel/ribbon idea.

I also have my dishsoap in a pretty bottle--mine has a pour spout, like a liquor bottle. One step further: olive oil in a similar bottle, sitting next to the stove. It's attractive & super-functional.

I use a pretty metal planter instead of a more traditional crockery utensil holder. It holds more, making it more functional for me, and since it's slightly flared I can easily get out items with fat handles (most notably, the SureGrips spatulas) without pulling out every other utensil.

I struggle in the decor department, but I'm totally going to steal your hand towel idea. Hand towels on the floor is seriously my #1 pet peeve!! My kids are little though, so its hard for them to always reach, but your idea is brilliant!!

I do have one thing that I did that people always comment on, which is my window treatments. I have inset palladian windows. I have silhouette blinds, but my valance is on a tension rod set into the window frame. I also bought custom stained glass to hang in the top arch of the palladians because I like the light and didn't want anything to block it, just filter or shade slightly. And its a bonus pop of color which I love!!

Oh, and that picture reminded me:

Table runners make great valances. A set of black metal pinch clips, 2 safety pins to tack back the pointed ends (either in front, for contrast, or in back, for tidiness), and you're in business. I get compliments on these all the time.

Cristin,

My windows look kind of like yours, only taller I think. My living room is 2 stories and the windows are floor to ceiling.

I love your table runner window valance!!! That is super clever! I'm looking at my kitchen windows now to see if that would work for me. But I have so many windows and they're all at awkward angles with the walls and ceilings. I just don't have vision for this kind of stuff.

I'd love to see another picture of your valance and the rod.

Thanks for the great ideas!!!

In the cheap but cute category..........

I have bay window in my son's room. Bay window curtain rods cost more than my house so I got 4 eyebolts and screwed them in at each "corner". Then I tied on the strongest weight frame wire I could find and threaded my valance on it. I then ran the wire through each of the eyebolts and flared out the ends of the valance to cover up the eyebolts. TADA and cost me less than $3.

For some reason I can only think of one thing right now (I have got to believe I have more than 1 piece of pratical decor in my house)

Instead of a double curtain rod, I use a tension rod for sheers. (behind the heavier drape/curtain)

Oh- got one more

I bought a 5 drawer dresser that matches my living room furniture (cherryish color) and we use that in my living room to hold all of our dvd's & cd's (and xbox games)

One of my favorite center pieces on the table comes from (at least for me) the movie The Break Up. A vase filled with lemons. So stylish and pretty to look at.

At Christmas time the same goes for a vase filled with christmas bulbs.

Sure--here you go:

I have them on both of the windows in that kitchen/dining area with wooden plantation blinds behind them. Works like a charm! Those runners came from Pier One, and the clips are like these:

http://www.bedbathstore.com/1coclri.html

Oh, and another good cheap one--for cute kids' room art, use postcards or book illustrations & mat with construction paper or scrapbook paper. Frames cost $2ish at Walmart--scrapbook paper is max $.50/sheet--and you can make something very customized for your space.

These are Ikea postcards, $1 for 5. A set of 5 framed 11x14 "prints" cost me $12. (Sorry they're far away--this is the only photo of the playroom I have in PB.)

I made my own duvet cover a few years back by sewing (and I don't sew well) 2 nice king size sheets(in solid beige) tuned inside out together and putting Velcro on the open end to seal it. I put my old comforter in it and seal it up and it looked wonderful so fluffy and I got tons of compliments on it.

What's fun about it is the endless possibilities in the sheets you pick.

I think doing kids duvet would be fun a solid and then a print on the back and you could flip it and change the room up.

I just measured my old comforter which was a king but since king size sheets are bigger it worked out great and I didn't need to buy any thing to fill it with, and soooo easy to take off and wash.

DS colored on the wall (on Dh's watch not mine) so I took the glass out of a picture frame and hung it on the wall with those on command picture hangers. Everyone loves that we have a sense of humor about stuff. Not exactly high style but whimsical. I am years away from "high Style" we are in the sippy cup and diaper stage still.

My cafe curtains in the kitchen are made from Dish towels, you have to do a double take to tell but they make me smile. I used to use the OXO clips as tie backs but we need them too often.

I have a big vase of old softballs it looks really cool, unfourtunatly it is in my garage untill the boys are done climbing eveything.

We took the rod out of one of the closets in the nursry and DH built a changing table inside. We are both really tall so it has been nice. traditional changing tables are too low and are only used for so long.

The hand towel idea is really cute!

This was one of my designer ideas lol two planks of wood hung to the wall (with extra strong double sided tape). When I first put them up I had them painted dark red (was the colour theme I had in our living room) also hung two long picture frames on it (as seen in the first pic) - all the pictures are black and white and red. I since re-painted them dark brown and put gold colour wall stickers on them...

My dd's room is a surf shoppe theme. For curtain rods I used bamboo rods from Michaels. I paid around $6 each (bought 2) and had dh cut them to size. They are the ones that are a really big. Looks awesome with her theme, I piad very little for them, and I get compliments. I just set them atop wooden "L" brackets. My dd's have never bothered them. Here are a few pics of it:

These are two pieces of artwork that our oldest son did in school. The Santa one was done in first grade and the Rudolph one was done in second grade. The paper that the artwork is on is kelly green. I took them to our local camera shop and had them matted in white and framed with a brushed silver frame. They look so great and colorful hung up in our house during the Christmas season!

Yep--just fold 'em back and pin 'em. Straight pins work too, but I like safety pins so that I don't have to worry about poking myself when I dust them. Nice table runners are at least 2 layers thick (facing fabric & lining) so if you're cautious, it's not hard to just grab one layer with the pin--it's secure, but you can't see a thing from the front.

If you like the fabric on the back & want the contrast, fold it forward; if you don't want the contrast on the ends, fold it back. Folding back makes it VERY easy to adjust for length--just fold back whatever spare you have, evenly on both sides so that one end isn't much heavier than the other when they're hanging, then run an iron over it to clean up the line of the edge and pin it.

We also do the lemon trick, though I put them in a glass drinking pitcher instead of a vase...looks more kitcheny to me. I have a really pretty, classic shape pitcher that I got at Target for $15 that works great. When we do fresh flower arrangements on the kitchen table, they also go in the pitcher instead of a vase.

This tip is not a decor touch so much as a child-proofing touch but instead of buying those cord windups to go on the miniblinds, I hung one of the see-through, removable Command hooks beside each window. They are barely noticeable and we can hook the cord over that instead of trying to wind it up or tie it up...much neater looking and safe, too!

No, my old comforter was a king size and I bought king size sheets to go over it. I even had extra sheet so I folded the deco line (that on the frount/top part of all sheet) down so you would not see it on the duvet so you could not tell I use a sheet.

Like many others, I used napkins for valences over my curtains. I had bought these curtains from Target, they were very plain. They were a slight bit darker than my wall color. So I found these napkins at Target that picked up on the border color in my rug. I used simple clippy hooks to hang them up. It dresses it up a bit until I get different curtains.

Here is a pic, I need to put shades on my chandelier still

I've actually done stuff like hot glued curtains and pillows with designer fabric samples I get on FreeCycle. If I had a working sewing machine I would use it. hehe

She links to a couple of different decorating blogs that I will be checking out next..

I'm officially stalking that Nesting Girl.

I want to marry her.

I'm also pretty fond of Wiggles and have written down the Scope and towel idea, along with someone else's softball idea (I have the perfect place for that and could use it for baby boy photography prop)

Great thread.

I love your idea with the planks of wood. I've been thinking of ways to add some color to my hallway without having to paint since we live on base housing. Now I just have to take some pictures of the kids and make a story board to hang on there.

Thanks to the person who posted the blog also. Right now I just have some boring cheap curtains I got from Target in my living room that I've been wanting to change. I didn't want to spend too much money because we won't be here forever so the mistreatments are perfect.

OK - I said VAGUELY remembered, so don't hold it against me if I was easily distracted in that store as is usually the case. If I get there tomorrow and they don't I'll be sure to post!

I'm thinking a trio of different sized taller ones would be perfect for a spot on my mantle and I can fill them with holiday-themed items or just have 4 different seasonal-type things. It really sucks sometimes that matzoh just doesn't make nearly as cute a decoration as bunnies & eggs!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that blog! Thanks so much for posting it! I don't sleep late at night well either Wiggles so I will be reading that blog most of the night!

One thing we have done is uplighting in our kitchen. (To do it this way you have to have a microwave that is mounted above your stove._ Put a strand of white Christmas lights up there ($2.00), have DH drill through the top of the cabinet above the microwave (with the drill thingy that makes a wide hole). Pull light plug through that hole and plug in where the microwave plugs in (it is in the back of the cabinet), then I hooked it up to one of those push buttons that turns the lights off/on the Christmas tree (on clearance for like 4 bucks). At night open the cabinet door push the button and voila. . . uplighting in your kitchen.

Yesterday I put up a shelf abovr my TV with three small beta fish tanks on it. I'm not done yet as I am to hang a couple pictures above and I want to get a track light to go over it and shine down. It was a little pricey if you add up the total cost of everything, but I bargain hunt like crazy! The shelf I bought almost a year ago for another room and hated where it was so I move it. The tanks were $1 each at Walmart, the fish and supplies (rocks, food, water conditioner, tank cleaner) was $28 total, I still want two more fish for the other tanks but only got one so far. The fish themselves are only $5. I have two pics to hang that cost $7 total, including the frames. All I need now is the track lighting but there was nothing suitable on sale today.

I also have three abstract pics that DS painted on regular paper one day and I framed them with cheap $2 frames and hung them above his bed!

also do what Meg just suggested with the lights.I put them above my cabinets behind my ivy strand, and then have the cord run in between the cabinets, (I have a small space that is not visable from the front) and plug them in behind my little tv, on a timer.Every night they come on at dusk and turn off at about 1 a.m.I only have to replace lights like once every 6 months. I just buy a few strands at the end of the xmas season when they go on sale. It really helps warm the room up!(thanks Meg, I totally forgot about that!)Here is a pic of of the top of my cabinets (in the day so no lights)I

I don't know where I could put it that would keep it safe from little kid putting it on his head and then throwing it to the ground and smashing it when I find him, but let me know if you see them at Target. I kind of think I remember seeing them in that section by the frames with the garden like accessories that aren't really outside stuff...like where they have that Smith & Hawkins brand or whatever.

I don't know, I'll check back to see if you've found one.

Also, anyone have any tips for headboards? My sons share a room and each boy's bed just had a dark wood headboard, but it needs something on it. What can you do to "decorate" a headboard?

Cool idea with the magnet and chalkboard doors.

So I put my soap in a pretty bottle (I had one of those olive oil and vinegar sets that's been waiting to debut at the dinner party I'll never have, so decided to use one for olive oil and one for soap) and now it's kind of slippery and doesn't fit right in my hand and takes a long time to get the soap out.

I probably used the wrong kind of pretty bottle huh? Now I'm bummed. It's taken all of the wind out of my sails. I may never lift a finger around here again. It does look pretty though.

I've loved reading everyone's ideas. I LOVE the bubbly laundry room. It would make me smile too.

The little thing that I do is decorate with sticks. I pick up sticks in my yard and arrange them in pretty vases or metal planters. They look great and are super cheap/free. For Easter, I got sticks yesterday and painted them white. I put them in a thrift store vase and hung Easter egg ornaments on the branches. It turned out pretty cute. I think I may make a couple more for teacher gifts.

That Nester blog has inspired me to make curtains. AH!!! I am very un-crafty, but it looks so easy. I am on Spring break this week and my project is to make curtains for at least one window.

I am ashamed to admit I have lots to practice on. I have floor to ceiling windows in my office and bedroom with NO curtains. I have a double sliding door with no curtains. And, DD's curtains are neon orange and pink, which were awesome until we decided to do the rest of the room in purple. It looks horrible.

I'll take before and after picks. If I'm brave, I may show them to people. I have a $50 gift card to Joann's to use-- I've got nothing to lose, right?

Sorry, I don't have actual pics, but maybe I can explain this as best as I can.

I've posted this one before, but I got one of these ledges.(Target clearance, TYVM) I took off the back, and put in a surge protector. I then drilled small holes on the top and wove in the plugs for our phone, IPod, camera. The shelf is in the kitchen. I can plug in all my electronics, and it looks nice and neat. I borrowed the idea from Pottery Barn.

I got these candle scones a few years ago. (not these exact ones, but you get the idea.) I did put them up on the wall, but after a while, I got tired of never lighting the candle and dusting the dumb things. I ended up putting my DD's tetra fishes in them instead. They aren't taking up counterspace. The kids cannot reach into the bowls. And they make the hallway look nice.

In my hallway, at kid level, I hung a few of these. My Target had some cute one in different colors, that match my decor. The kids use their magnets on these, instead of the kitchen. It just makes the kitchen look nicer, and the hallway is pretty much useless space anyways, KWIM?

I also have one of these bookcases in the hallway, hanging at kid level, too. (I made mine, borrowing the idea from PB.) I was just sick of their books being everywhere! I put it in the hallway, since again it was just space that wasn't being used. I no longer trip over books, and the girls love to put them away themselves. Making the bookcase cost me $11 in materials.

HTH!

ETA: to fix links.

ETA II: Sassy101: can you post a link to the mantle pics? I can't seem to find them. Thx.

This has been a great thread. So many good ideas! I get a lot of compliments on the little nightstand I decorated for my dd's room. I just took a plain round decorator table and painted it white and hot glued mirabu (sp?) trim around the table. Then I let my dd pick some of her favorite pictures to put under the glass part. We also used scrapbooking stickers to scatter amongst the pictures. I think it turned out really cute, and we can change the pictures out any time she wants. Please excuse the empty picture frames on the nightstand. I just found those this week and have not had time to put photos in them yet.And this is a picture of our family that my dd drew when she had just turned 5. I had this old frame that I found at a huge craft fair and it originally had a mirror in it. I took the mirror out and had a piece of glass cut to fit it and framed her picture. I hung it on the wall going into my mudroom. It makes me smile whenever I look at it.

Hey, thanks! I love the orange--it's SO rich & delicious in person. I actually just had to paint over it because my house is going on the market in a week--stupid neutralizing.

The shelves are cubby shelves from Target that they don't carry anymore. I like the cubbies because I find it makes it easier for the kids to pick up after themselves--when the box fits precisely into the cubby, they're easy to put away; if I put boxes on open shelving, they're all random about how far over to push them or how exactly to make them fit right.

ETA--oh, the DIY electronics shelf is GENIUS--between my phone, dh's phone, his wireless earpiece, the 2 Ipods, and the camera, I am drowning in wires. So smart to make your own!

I always prefer black picture frames--cheap ones don't look any worse than expensive ones, they always all match one another, and you can always find them regardless of changing trends. Plus, they're handsome on any picture, color or b&w. A big old white or cream mat and a black frame--perfect.

I've enjoyed reading your ideas so here are some things I've done...

Framed artwork of my 5 yo in our office. I bought 4 matching frames and put in some paintings he did at school.

I just made tie up curtains for my living room. I got a pack of 2 sheer white panels from Target. I used a tension rod and then got some fun ribbon. I looped the ribbon over the top of the rod and tied it to pull up the curtains. I'll take a pic in a bit because I don't know fo it makes sense.

I bought a big colorful plate from Pier One and a plate stand. Fun decor for my kitchen counter.

I have an artwork board for my kids' schoolwork in the kitchen. I got it at Pottery Barn but it could easily be hand made. It's a piece of wood with 3 big clips on it. Each kid gets a clip.

The kids' bathroom is fish themed so I put a pretty bowl on the counter and filled it with sea shells.

I dolled up some curtains for our spare room. I hot glued some ribbon with hanging beads to the bottom hem. [

Keep 'em coming!

The cashiers at Walmart couldn't figure out they got the price tag on a lemon with those plastic tag hangers (kwim??) w/o the lemon going bad...was funny. The panels are almost the whole height of the wall (you can make that smaller if you want) and the width is 18 inches. I used a glossy paint. Hung it using heavy duty double sided tape (Houses here in Holland are made with cement slabs and not just dry wall... making holes in the wall call for a bit more effort). The wall stickers I bought at Ikea... I am not sure if they have them yet in the North American Ikea's.

The Hobby Lobby has very cheap garden decor in bright colors now. I bought a hanging butterfly, and a cute watering can, and a darling bird house in bright pink and purple, for DD room. I paid half of what I would if I boiugt those itmes in a traditional decor isle. She has a subtle Dora theme, with a purple and pink butterfly tone. I am not a character fan, but the garden decor made it look cute rather than tacky. My batteries are out in the camera or I would take pics! Maybe I will try here in a minute. I also bought tulle at walmart and draped it over her windows. I think it cost around 4 dollars for the whole treatment.

These are the tie up curtains. I cannot get a better pic right now due to the sun on that side of the house. You get the idea though.

My Pottery Barn wall art shelf. Could easily be made on your own with some wood and clips.

I used a hot glue gun to add the beaded ribbon trim to the bottom of these curtains in our spare room.

Okay they are not my idea's but instead my Mama Ruth's. I plan to use them though. LOL

They were redecorating and instead of buying all new outlet covers and lightswitches she just spray painted them (cause they have spray paint in every color and style now). They look awesome and have a metal color finish to them.

Another thing I thought was great was they took those little crown molding squares and drilled them into the wall behind doors where the door stop meets the wall. I know I always end up with holes in the walls and this is a perfect way to prevent that. You could even paint them to match your walls.

She also spray painted the metal parts of a ceiling fan she had a dark grey metal color and spray painted the boards a cherry wood color. OMG it looks so GOOD.

She's even started spray painting picture frames - which I plan to do as well to make all of mine match. This way I don't have to go buy new ones.

We're in military housing so I can't spray paint the ceiling fans yet - LOL. I can't wait to have my own place.

Have a ? - my entertainment center is a dark oak/cherry color. Would black picture frames look right in the living room with it?

Holly

Our toy area is under our stairs. It is pretty dark under there, so I bought some Christmas rope lights and put them under the stairs so that the toy area is well lit. You can't see them in the picture, but it makes it much easier for the kids to play!

I tend to use sheets and clips for curtains. Every room in my house that has more than one window has one at 95 inches and the other at 84 inches. 95 inch curtains are EXPENSIVE. Regular bedsheets are perfect! I buy double or queen sized for wide windows and twin for narrow windows. Add clips to the curtain rod, clip on the sheets and voila! Cheap, easy curtains!

Does anyone have any suggestions for covering an arched window? It's a rectangle on the bottom (about a foot or so high) and then a big half circle on top. I might normally just not put anything on it, but it's right above my bath tub and there are houses right behind us. I'm short, though, so I can get away with just covering the bottom part. I tried just a tension rod with fabric just folded over, but it looked--well, just like a cheap rod with fabric draped over. Any ideas? Thanks!

I just wanted to say that if you like that magnetic door but don't want to drill holes you can buy magnetic paint. It is more like a primer, dark grey, and you can then paint over it whatever color you want.

When we were trying to encourage DS to write more we made him a huge magnet board. It is just a big pc of plywood, that DH put trim around, and a little "chalk board" style shelf on the bottom.

We told him he could hang up anything he wanted as long as he labeled it.

Ashley;

My sink is on a peninsula, and I was afraid a pretty bottle would get knocked onto the floor, so I wanted something more stable. I use a soap or lotion pump - the kind you normally find in bathroom sets. I found a brushed steel one, that matches my sink, looks sleek & not at all bathroom-ish.

This isn't mine, but it gives you the idea:

I love it. I know that 2 squirts is enough to do a load of dishes, and it is a lot easier/nicer to wash my hands at the kitchen sink with this, rather than digging under the sink for the plastic bottle.

At Lowe's and the HD, they sell pleated paper for the arched windows. They are in the blind section. Measure the width of your arch before going. The kit will tell you how to cut the paper (non-serrated knife), and then it opens like a fan. I'm sure I'm doing a terrible job of describing it.

LOVE this thread!! OK, here are mine.

1. I bought this little peg rack at Coldwater Creek, but didn't really want to hang coats, towels, etc. from it. It seemed to pretty to stick in a laundry room, coat room or bathroom. So instead I bought two colors of coordinating ribbon and 4 small wood frames from Michaels and framed some pictures from a day at the zoo with my 2 DSs.

2. This is a framed handprint of both DSs made using a large stamp pad of ink and just a regular sheet of printer paper. Put their names under each print and the date at the bottom. This is hung in a prominent place in the house.

That Lattee color is very nice! We need to repaint our guest bath and I think that may be the color. I think it would work with what I have in my head as a color scheme for that room...I'm thinking about putting Tobacco Road (from Nesting Place) in my kitchen, I really really like that color.

Click here - I love the Halloween theme in that pic (the spider 'balls' are adorable). I really like your wall color...

Earthenways - that is a really nice picture holder & the handprint idea is nice, I think I might do that with the kids soon!

Pinkpastacio - your DH is doing a great job with those shelves, I am jealous of all the storage and room to accessorize.

Stars - if you have a Christmas Tree Shop (NE) nearby, I got some there, although mine need to be distressed a bit. I paid $4ish for a decent sized star...

WARNING: STOLEN PICTURE

I was getting sad because our camera is in for repair & i couldn't share my laundry room pictures. But lo & behold, a VERY similar pic appeared!!

Dammit! Typing that made me forget who's picture this is. If I can, I'll try to edit before someone else replies. If not, I apologize 100% for stealing this pic! I just wanted to use it to describe my laundry room.

Okay so look at the background of this pic (the fence with the vines & stuff). Our laundry room is sky blue with almost this exact picket fence (we painted vines and daisies). We painted clouds in the sky and random butterflies & dragonflies around the room. I wanted it to have a bright outdoor feeling so we could have indoor picnics when it was raining outside.

Yay!! I was fast enough!!! Okay credit goes to Mommy2girlygirls. I really hope you don't mind me using it. It's so pretty anyway that it deserves double exposure!!

Here are some pictures to help "explain" the Christmas light idea. We haven't done it at our new house and I don't have pictures from our old house, so I will try to explain it as best I can.

Okay so notice the bowls above the kitchen cabinets. Those will be our home base to explain this from.

So notice how you can't see the bottom of the bowls in this next picture. The lights are going to hide in that space behind the trim.

Here is a better view of the gap behind the cabinet ledge.

Notice how in the original kitchen picture you can't see the shoebox or phone book. This is where you will run your lights. Just stretch the strand out and lay it across the length og your cabinets. Then end the strand with the plug right above the microwave cabinet. Drill through the cabinet with a large enough bit to fit the plug in through. Pull the plug through the top of the cabinet and plug in using a tree light switch on/off.

Here is the plug in that is in the cabinet abover the microwave.

Here is the plug in I use. Then all you have to do is open the cabinet door and tap on the uplighting. It looks really nice when completed.

I have managed to keep this house to a minimal claiming I didn't want a small house cluttered. But now we are getting a big house and that means I will have to get accessories and stuff to dust...

Magnet paint- Who ever suggested the magnet paint:

That paint is under the steel door sheet. I used a whole can and it didn't work. The paint is also extremely gritty in texture. I also tried the magnetic paper sheets. Neither of these even had enough of a magnetic force to hold heavier magnets such as the farm fridge or word whammer. When comes time to sell the house the holes will get puttied sanded then painted- whala! no magnet board.

Just letting you know to save your money the paint and sheets aren't cheap!

Mommy Meg-We have lived in our house for a YEAR and I've been brainstorming how to run a cord up from a regular outlet to the top of our cabinets. It wasn't until I read your post that it hit me that there's an outlet above the microwave! I didn't even think of checking there! Thanks for your post, you saved me another year of trying to figure out where to run the cord . . We put lights wrapped w/ garland and berries above our cabinets at Christmas. I'd love to try it year round like you mentioned.

Hmmmm...I really like the uplighting idea but don't have a microwave above the stove (something I miss from our old house). I do have a stainless steel hood that must plug in SOMEWHERE, but damned if I can find it. I looked in the cupboards above the hood, and the wall above those cupboards, but can't find a plug. Any ideas??

I LOVE the shelf/charger idea. I am so going to do that. So all the charger cords AND the surge protector fit inside the shell of the shelf?

I have an enormous playroom that is begging to be decorated. I have a couple ideas but no energy. I want to put shelving all the way around the ceiling...a good place to display those sentimental books or stuffed animals that otherwise would clutter surfaces. Just a foot or two below the ceiling. Kind of a big project, though, so I haven't gotten to it.

The bubbles in the laundry room - how did you do those? I'm not getting it - those aren't painted bubbles - they're actually wallpaper bubbles on a blue painted background?

ari&elimom ~ I think a piece of plexi glass could definitley work on a regular bedside table. That is a great idea! I think I might just have to do that in my other dd's room because she has a regular nightstand. I know Home Depot or Lowes can cut the glass to fit perfectly for you. Plexi glass would be a safe alternative too.

Irene~ Here are a couple of pictures that I have in photobucket of dd's room. I have changed a few things since these pics were taken but you can at least get the idea. To make the fence dh cut an actual picket and then measured it out and traced it all the way around the room. I then just used sponges to make the roses and free handed the vines. It was not a difficult project, but it was time consuming. Thanks everyone for the compliments. We have always been really proud of how her room turned out.

I am renting a townhome. They already had the walls painted, so I am making it "work" with what we ended up with...

I love the light pink kitchen stuff, and their kitchen was mint green. I found these circle removable stick-ons at the dollar store and decided to do something funky with the cabinets. I wouldn't do this in my "forever" home, but it is something fun for now...

The dining room has the same concept (since they are attached! LOL)
I also found some stick-ons on clearance at Lowe's, and did this "mural" on my DD's room...

So, even if you can't do permanent stuff, removable sticks ons are awesome!

Well, I went to Hobby Lobby today. $600 later I'm home

That place is EVIL!

however, I got furniture. I can't belive it, I got a coffee table and a 1/2 round table. I don't have pics yet, but I'll be sharing them soon. Both are black, but with a distressed finish so there is brown under it.

I already had pictures of the kids hanging on the wall behind the sofa, but DH is re working it for me. I'm including a mirror and the little shelves and frames to hide the thermostat. LOVE that idea. Totally stealing ideas from Nesting Place. If I ever meet that woman I may just kiss her.

Oh, and I have the exact same dining hutch that the Nesting place lady (It's Hooker, LOVE my Hooker furniture) and I picked up some scrapbooking paper today to knock off that idea as well. DH really liked it.

Next on my list is to rework my window treatments in the kitchen and make some "mistreatments" for the living room.

I'm on a roll now, I'm feeling it.

Oh, and a little secret. we all know about the new BBC boards coming. As a host of another board, I've gotten a sneak peak and created us a board called Decorating Divas! I hope it takes off, I think it'll be fun. I'll send out invites as soon as I can.

I'm so glad that my HL is a good 25 minute drive. If it were closer I'd be broke (oh wait, I already am)

Our thermostat is also high traffic, but I'm doing it anyway. I'm surprised, DH thought it was a great idea and he likes to poop on my ideas until they are done and then he decides that he likes them

I also bought a star. I have wanted one for so long and then we moved to TX. You can't have a star in TX b/c EVERYONE has a star in TX. Here though, not so much. But, it's for Jacks room. I'm going to be working on it as well doing a cowboy theme. It's going to be subtle, but the star will make it perfect.

Anyway, back to Nesting. Her living room is so muc like mine and I'm stealing quite a few of her ideas. My mirror and pictures are almost identical!

Tomorrow on my list is Joanns, Home Goods and Target.

Oh, and I'm in the need for Joanns coupons so if anyone has one they aren't planning to use...hint hint I've got two rooms that I need fabric for.

My star wasn't HUGE. Not big enough to go over the mantle. All of their wall decor was 1/2 off today, so it ended up costing me a whopping $12 and my picture frames were $6. Highway robbery, that's what it is!

I was bummed though. I really need a large vase for the top of my armoir. I want black (esp now that my coffee table is black) but couldn't find one big enough or cheap enough, they weren't on sale. I'm going to do the little birds nest pic on top of the armoir (w/o the nest, dh hated it) So I need the big black vase and some apothacary jars, i already have frames up there.

I officially HATE all of you! And I am leaving the board!!

J/K! But, I do wish I could go on a spree and decorate. My house is just sorta sparse. I wish I had the $$$ to spend!

Oh, and I am jonesing (how would one spell that??) over some silk drapes for my great room and dining room. I even already have the rods with the clip rings up. My MIL would kill me because she just made the ones I have up 2 years ago when we moved in here.

There is so much I would like to do to this builder grade house of ours. I just need the cash! A job would help, huh?

This has been a cool thread!

So, for those of us who don't have Hobby Lobby, is there anything else like it? Online or (preferably) B&M? We have craft stores like Ben Franklin and Michael's, but it really doesn't sound like these even compare with Hobby Lobby. Any ideas/suggestions?

tinkleadem-You could try stores like Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, Marshalls, TJMaxx and Tuesday Morning. I've found some really neat things at Tuesday Morning. Let me try and keep thinking of other stores. I think it's mostly just looking while you're out. I've seen some really neat things at the most random stores! You could also maybe try Pier I?

Everyone definitely post pics! I'm excited to see what you all come up with. We have family coming in for the week which will be fun, but that means our decorating is on hold for the next week or so.

Mel-I love the new thread idea! Thanks!

Oh! And I feel like I should post the Nesters Etsy store link as well since we're all loving/using her ideas: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5545623. These are adorable!

Ok, how in the world did I miss this thread this week?? I am LOVING these ideas and the Nesting Blog...oh my goodness! I just spent 45 minutes reading it and plan on getting back on in just a bit. I love love love it!

I too love Hobby Lobby. I go there and Garden Ridge once a week. Love both places! Garden Ridge (or at least mine) is hit or miss, so if I don't go weekly, I always think that I'm going to miss out on something.

For those looking for stars....I was in Kirkland's this week and they have a large selection of various sized stars.

Alisha, I am making your hand towel tomorrow! I got my sewing machine out today to make some pillowcase dresses and I have alot of ribbon leftover. A towel will be perfect! Great idea!

Ok, I need some suggestion as to what to do with this wall and my entertainment center. I love my entertainment center, but it is an awkward height. I also need something to go on the wall to the right of it. Any ideas?

Like I said before, my house is very builder grade and I am dying to have the money to upgrade things like mouldings, etc.

A big red tin star over the armoire might work well. It would compliment the blues in the room and work as a transition to the red in the next room.

Well, I got some apothecary jars tonight at Big Lots. I found the pack of 3 for $20 that another pp was talking about. They are pretty cute. I also saw another 3 pack at Gordman's for $25 that I love too! I may have to go back and get them too and see where all they need to go. LOL I couldn't find a decanter for the bathroom anywhere though! Where can I find a decanter? My DH is loving the idea of having one in his bathroom. He's all for me taking down my baskets (Longaberger) from above my kitchen cabinets and re-doing it up there too. I haven't looked at the blog yet but I have it saved and it will be the first thing I do during naptime on Monday.

I think you need color there, IMHO! If money were no object, I'd say a piece from one of these two artists:

www.aaronfoster.com
http://chrisroberts-antieau.com/

I'm not a big fan of quilts in my decor, but I think with the colors and style you have going on, something a "little" Americana like these artists would be perfect in that big space.

But this is the bargain board, so here are my other ideas:

*wrap 3 large canvases in fabric that you like
*take a favorite photo and have it enlarged on an XL canvas
*a large vintage poster like one of these: http://www.decoratorart.com/vintageposterart.htm

Do you use real lemons or plastic ones? What do you recommend? If plastic, where did you find them?

Any pictures...........

I've made cornices using both foam board and cardboard (the tri-fold ones) and covering w/material using a hot glue gun. NO one ever could tell, and I got a ton of compliments on them. Also, sheers and ribbon make easy, cheap balloon shades. Use clips or tie ribbons to hang. Shower curtains and sheets (even pillow cases for valances) make great longer curtains too. (Don't remember if someone mentioned that or not.)

I have place mats hanging in my upstairs loft on the wall. They look great but can't tell they're place mats.

My beta fish swims around in a "Kook-aid" type of pitcher on my kitchen counter.

I take pics of my kids painting and when I hang their finished projects in frames, I put the photo of them working on it right in the corner of the frame.

Two finals (and kind in the world), some photo hanging wire attached to each & about 3' apart -or whatever- and some mini clips to hang papers/projects make a wonderful, cheap and very talked about art display.

Laminate the same sized photos to make a 'tile' boarder in a bathroom-especially around a sunken tub. Use the same theme (a beach vacation) for a boost.

We collect big rocks from hikes and paint them every year w/the boys to set outside in our flower bed.

I bought dec. stepping stones and have them leading up to my yds' play house. We even plant flowers in little pots every year and 'landscape' his house, too.

And, I am in the planning stages of using a cork-board strip as a boarder/chair rail type-for my ods' room. I'm hoping that will eliminate the poster plastered wall holes. We'll see.

I have boys, so my hand towels are on a hook and I figured I could use twine or thick rope for the loops (actually one loop)-makes it more 'masculine' which is important when you're trying to please a teenager too!

If I could figure out how to post pics from Mac, I would add them-tomorrow though. I'm already feeling that loss of an hours worth of sleep.

Can you please post detailed instructions on how you re-created the PB Magazine/Book rack for $11.00. You have NO IDEA how long I have been dying for one of those. And to be able to re-create the look for that is an added bonus!

I'm so jealous of those who have a Hobby Lobby.

I've found alot of cute things at my local consignment shop. My favorite find was a 3 tier plate rack. I had some plates from my nana that I loved and never found a use for. I added them and some mini pumpkins, gourds and leaves for a great fall decoration

I have a dumb question. I want to make these for my kitchen(from the nesting blog) and I've never walked in to a store and bough a piece of fabric. I don't even know where to go for that (can you tell that I'm not very crafty, lol?). I think this is easy enough to make, even for me. I have a Michael's by me, do they sell fabric by the yard?

Someone explain to me about framing the thermostat?

We have no Hobby Lobby which sucks for me because I hear they sell the sugar mold candles little kid broke.

As someone who has had a ginormous Amish barn star since way before Pottery Barn, I find it highly annoying they're so popular now.

I have been redecorating my house with the stuff I already have all day today and it is so nice! I've been inspired by this thread and the nester. I also decorated my front table super cute. All in all, it's just exciting to care again! Stuff has gotten stale around here and I really have some cool stuff, I love old, character filled things and have lots of it.

I'm going to go to Michael's tomorrow to look for a cloche and Joanns to get scrapbooking paper for the back of the ugly hutch I was just going to throw out. Now I'm going to paint it black and paper the back...I'm thinking possibly even in something lime green. Oh it would be so brave. I'm also going to scope out fabric for my sliding glass door mistreatment.

I forgot to add to my last post that I am super excited about DECORATING DIVAS! Thanks Mel!!

To the pp asking about buying fabric....just go to Hobby Lobby , JoAnns or Hancock Fabrics and ask a sales person to help you. I love the ladies at my Hancock. They are very knowledgable. Or, if you have a local fabric shop, that would be even better. I would steer clear of Walmart or any discount store that might have fabric. I know in my Walmart, the fabric salespeople do not know much about fabric.

Clean-

That wall needs a little weight....I would prob hang a large rug=---dark red, a take off of the one in your kitchen---I would make sure it is big enough to cover most of the wall---center it, hang it high and make sure it comes down far enough to fall behind the table on the side of your armoire --just my thought---

i think all of the small frames grouped together may get lost on the wall--

hope this helps!

I spent most of the day looking for a bedside decanter. I finally found an inexpensive one at Crate and barrell for $16.95. Also, for seashell accessories Kohls has a lot. They had seashells for around $10.

Tomorrow was going to be an off day, but my mom just had to mention that she needed to go to Big Lots. Darn her, I guess I'll just have to join her.

Question for all you decorating ladies. We are completely re-doing our house. It's stuck in the 70's with the wood paneling, glass squares over the mantel. OUCH...UGLY! My question is about the kitchen. It's long and narrow with a breakfast nook area for the dining area. The shelves are a glossy brown right now. I really want to re-do them. What colors would you recommend for a small kitchen with not a lot of natural light? Our appliances are mostly white.

Smurfette, I'm just going to make one of the valance sort of ones over my sliders. I'm so freakin' sick of not having anything there, curtains or anything that hangs down isn't practical for that spot, I cannot afford rods and cannot nag Mr. Ashley to hang cornices (even no sew, which I think I could to)

So me and my upholstery tacks and my fabric are going to pleat/drape/glue something together.
