Twins BUSTED

I just wanted to say that your new siggy picture of the girls is soooo cute. They don't look like a Harriet and Matilda to me though, more like an Aubrey and Oliver.

this shot was taken by the nurses at the NICU.

Wow. shockedshockedshocked I seriously hope only the picture is fake, and not the story, but that wouldn't make any sense..... I can't see a "real" mother posting fake pics of her babies in the NICU. Either way, this makes me feel sick to my stomach, esp for the the mom whose baby pics were possibly "stolen." This is the reason why I don't post any personal info and never pics of my child.

For anyone that is confused, this is Amanda's siggy pic...

Which she stole from a website created by the parents of two real premature twins, named Aubrey and Oliver (both boys). The actual twins are doing very well, it seems, they look like thriving, healthy toddlers.

Wow, so sad. To think that I actually spent time praying for "Matilda and Harriet". I wish that mother would stop and think about how there really are mothers out there who really do give birth to premature babies. To pretend that you are in the same boat is like spitting in the faces of mothers who really do have to deal with something like that.

You know what I don't understand? This is a place for name nerds/naming enthusiasts. There's no requirement to be pregnant or to be a mother to take part. In fact, some of the most interesting participants here are those who are TTC or who are not even contemplating married/actual birth yet. So why people create on line personnas that are based on fraud is beyond me. And stealing pictures of another woman's child is just plain freaky.

As a mother who has actually had an emergency c-section and a child in the NICU, I can assure you that I had no time or bandwidth for the girls' naming board (as much as I dig this group!)

Nice work, Detective Mary-Catherine....a lot of us felt that this story didn't ring true. Thanks for providing the concrete proof.

Just curious, mostly for future reference, what made some of you think it was a troll? I would have never had a clue.... I must be very naive. sad Although, something in the back of my brain thought the picture was strange, probably because she said she couldn't hold one of the babies and then there she was holding them.

Wallybear, you said exactly what I had been thinking for days. When my brother and SIL had premature twins in the NICU, they barely had time to call my mother with progress reports.

I'm always a little suspicious when someone shows up and just magically seems to have children with some of the most popular names on the board.

I haven't been around here very long . . . do you all often get sTROLLers?

MJ: You are so right. Attention seeking psychos.

To answer the question about what tipped me off...let me count the ways (here are just a few)

1) Emergency c-section & preemies in the NICU and a "son" with pneumonia but plenty of time to take part on many threads on this board. Most parents I know would be too sick with worry to weigh in on whether Annabelle's middle name should be Grace or Charlotte...

2) Black and white pictures mixed in with color (can't control the color settings of pictures you steal, can you?)

3) High drama on every front. ...the delivery (emergency), the premature arrival of the twins, the older bro in the hospital too. Most trolls go overboard with the drama level of their stories.

3) The perfect husband at home. That was a dead giveaway!wink

Question -- who was planning to visit "Amanda" in the hospital? Queen Bee, was it you? (I apologize if I've mixed that up!) Did she actually send you emails from a seemingly normal account or were your communications solely through this forum? I am just fascinated and repulsed that this person would go to such lengths to dope people on line. Very creepy.

Like others, I was suspicous from the beginning. To answer the question why, here are some reasons, some of which others have already mentioned:

Obviously it's weird to spend time giving progress reports on a board (not to mention sounding so chipper in them.) Even more strange to have time to offer advice to other posters. Hard to believe an internet group, no matter how chummy, would be a priority in the midst of this kind of stress and struggle.

The names. They were almost "too" perfect. Obviously intended to appeal to the board's general taste.

Finally - the narrative quality of the story. (This is something we've seen with other trolls on here before.) It unfolds like a soap opera. It's all highs and lows, which especially come through in the over-the-top details. One day brother Alistair is ill. THe next day thoughtful husband has the nursery painted. And the story develops in such a way that the troll can continue to milk it for a long time. So it was "convenient" to the plot that one twin was thriving while the other was not doing as well.

Watching it unfold just infuriates me and I feel angered on behalf of the people who believe the story, since they are wasting such good energy (whether prayers or well wishes) and thougtfulness on someone who doesn't deserve it. But until there is "hard" evidence, there is really nothing that can be done without breaking board rules. So kudos to Mary-Catherine for finding that proof.

There really are lots of wonderful, kind, interesting, thoughtful, REAL people with great taste in names on this board. But, unfortunately, it takes a while to know for certain who they are.

Edited to add: I see Kristen outlined similar reasons while i was typing my post. You can see we've all gotten rather good at this. Sadly.

Well, for somebody with premature twins in the NICU as well as a sick toddler, she sure spent a lot of time hanging around this joint, giving progress reports and helping others with naming dilemmas.

I was initially suspicious of her large amount of time on these boards after the twins' birth .... but I just figured she was laying in bed recuperating from the birth with a PC in her lap and was using these boards as a "release" from the stress of her situation ........ it IS sad for those that "care" and are genuinely interested to be fooled and misled, but that is a "hazard' of being on-line, ya just never know! That is why it's important to just concentrate on the "names" themselves, and not get too caught up in the personal stuff.

I must say though, that this woman's posts seem to be more mature then just a teenager fooling around ... it's bothersome if a "grown" woman is wasting her time with this stuff..... (of course, I am a "grown" woman who likes to "waste" my time talking about baby names --- ack! cool)

That being said, like Deena, I was once accused of being a troll, and although the situation fortunately worked itself out (and I am STILL here asking if you like Sabrina or Katya or Grant or Trevor mischief,) it sure didn't feel good to be "wrongly accused" either, so I am hoping we can just stop talking about it soon so as to not feed the fire any further ..... I am guessing that if we DON"T hear from "Amanda" again, we will have our answer ....... until she trolls again ....... with her quadruplets silly......

I didn't contribute to any of the threads in question, but I feel bad for the ladies who invested themselves emotionally in this woman and her story. There were an awful lot of trolls on this board back when I used to post every day, and I've definitely become more wary of involving myself "personally" in other posters' dilemmas.

Actually, as I recall, I myself was accused of being an imposter several years back. Has anybody else been here long enough to remember Skylar and Aston, the young friends who just *happened* to be pregnant with twins at the same time? Anyhow, I was lumped in with them because, as my accuser put it, I used semi-colons incorrectly, the same way Aston did. *Shrug* Ah, well ... I'm still here, eight years later, and am not bitter in the slightest about having once been called a phony. wink

I've been meaning to ask for some time ... did Rachel (from London) stop posting on this board for good? I think that her departure may have had something to do with the way she dealt with a troll, but I'm not positive ...

I was suspicious of ready4twins from the start, the result of far too many years spent on these boards and witnessing the comings and goings of far too many trolls.

The horrid thing is that these poor wenches taint things for everyone round here. I mean, someone recently posted a beautiful birth story that is almost certainly for real, yet I found myself reading it with a cynical eye. I should have been weeping with joy for the poster and her family who have welcomed a new life into the world and shared their joy with us, instead I found myself Googling stuff to check that it was real. Isn't that sick?

I think the other thing that any trolls on this site should remember is that the chances are you will be caught out sooner or later. We've had some very determined and very 'authentic' trolls in the past and it has shattered us all to find out the truth, but that won't stop intelligent women like Mary-Catherine digging a little to expose them.

I, like many others, never believed "Amanda's" story and thus, never posted on her threads. I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but it's impossible to be a pregnant woman and watch someone do something so incredibly horrid. What if my baby really is premature? It's just sick to make up a story like that to get the attention and sympathy from others, when there are REAL women who are dealing with such terrible circumstances every day.

Please, who has that much time to spend on a board when all three of their children are supposedly in the hospital for illness reasons? And my husband, who is amazing and currently putting together the crib in our nursery, would not paint a room to "surprise" me. He'd be too afraid of picking the wrong color. Not to mention, that he should be helping to take care of and visit all the sick children. Painting a room takes quite a lot of time. I digress.

Stealing pictures and making up utterly fake stories makes my stomach hurt. I've been on this board for a few years now and for most of it I wasn't pregnant and yet, I was more than warmly accepted. Why can't people see that? We all got burned a while back by a few pretty intense trolls and it's hard to trust a lot of people. Forgive us.

You know, I never paid enough attention to Amanda to even wonder. I hate to sound rude, but for whatever reason, I just wasn't ever really interested in reading her posts.
We've had several women like this on my own forums. I've always busted them the same way you did, M-C... those pictures will trip them up everytime! Whenever I suspect someone of being phoney, I am just itching for them to start posting pictures so that I can have some solid proof. They haven't let me down yet. Unfortunately, my board is rather attractive to these types of trolls since the subject is fodder for a fantastic story. My board is for those dealing with tubal ligation regret. My third son was born due to a tubal ligation failure and my board is full of (genuine) women praying the same will happen for them. Every now and again we get someone who joins us (sometimes for a very long time, too!) and claims to have a "miracle" pregnancy of their own or a miscarriage after a "miracle" pregnancy. The ladies on my forums are very personal with one another, it's an extremely close community and emotions already run high. So, when I have to expose these crazy ladies, it really is devastating to them. The worst we had was one woman who was actually being watched by the FBI for adoption scams she was running and from stealing donations, claiming to be a Hurricane Katrina disaster victim.
Also, the handful of women I have banned for concocting these stories have NOT been teenagers. They were all women somewhere in their 30's. It's rather sad, isn't it?
On the siggy site I used to design on we did have one teenager we caught. She was15 or so and claimed to be the mother of triplets. She had tons of video and and photographs of the triplets and of her with the triplets. As it turns out, they were babies her mother would babysit ocassionally.
And, you know, I'm still really not a cynical person. I refuse to let these nutty people make me distrustful of others. I know that most people are real and genuine and I believe until I have a reason not to believe.

How sad. It really gives us something about, scares me out of posting pics of the girls. I hope the real twins are doing very well now, I have been far too busy with my girls to be on here much recently, the more mobile they get its getting harder to find the time! But being able to update so well from the hospital sounds like a dead giveaway. I had no time for any sort of computer activity while in the hospital, if I had a sick 2yr old son as well I have no idea how I'd have managed it all! Just wow.

I just wanted to say that my reasons for suspecting "Amanda" were the same as the others that have been posted- too many high & lows and drama that didn't add up. DH finally agrees to the names she loves sooo much, and then suddenly she's in labor. The baby's are born premature and Alistair comes down the pneumonia. One baby thrives while the other one struggles and DH decorates a nursery. None of these things on their own screams "troll" Heck, all of these things could be true, but supposedly all this is going on and she still has time to post updates, not just here, but on 5 other boards that I know of us well.

I had this happen on my DD's birthboard (not BBC) a troll that posted with us from the time we were pregnant until our DC were 8 months old. Her stories never quite added up, but she didn't start posting pictures until she suddenly got pregnant shortly after her third DD's birth, and then the new baby was born extremely premature (her youngest two DD's were now only 8 months apart) It turned out that the pictures of her preemie were stolen from a support board for parents. We all felt used and betrayed, having been so emotionally invested in her stories."Amanda"s posting had that same quality, and I didn't want other people feeling the way we did.

The only problem with "troll busting" is that it makes everyone suspicious. I considered trying to out her privately in email, and that would have worked to get "Amanda" to go away. However, if the rest of the board still didn't suspect her, she most likely would have tried to reappear under a new name and start all over again.

This board is a wonderful place, and there are a lot of real, genuine women (and one dad!) posting here. And while "Amanda" used fabulous names- that doesn't mean everyone with wonderfully named children is fake. Same for posting birth stories- most stories that are posted are true.

Finding her pictures was with a yahoo image search for "twins in NICU" It's actually very easy to "out" a troll that shows a lot of photos.

Kara/Jesterette: I've been meaning to mention that I visited your web site several weeks ago...what an amazing & inspirational story! But yes, I could see how it might be a magnet for a few nut cases who enjoy drama and the attention it draws. It's nice to hear that, despite the trolls, you aren't a cynical person.

I tend to assume that everyone posting on this board has a genuine interest in names -- and that they are who they say they are. I've been around BBC long enough to have seen a few really freaky trolls, but as M-C has recognized, the overwhelming majority of women here (and our buddy CK Evans) are simply good people who enjoy discussing naming choices.

So let's party on, with one less drama queen in our midst!happy

For some reason, the nurse coming up with the nickname Hattie really stuck out to me. Give me a break!

You have created quite a stir on the BC board. Many of the ladies are a little worried about their personal pictures and ID's being posted here. Please consider editing this information for the sake of their privacy.
